Empathy Unleashed: A Guide from 'The Empathy Effect' by Helen Riess
What is empathy? Empathy is a great tool to relate to your fellow humans. You've probably heard of Brene Brown. She's done videos and lots of talks about empathy. There is another author here, Helen Riess, and she's written a book called The Empathy effect. She defines empathy and she also gives you an easy way to remember how to be empathetic. There's an actual method and it has, the reminder is an acronym for the word empathy. This is really a brilliant E is for eye contact. So make eye contact with the person that you're talking to. Notice M is for micro expressions. So notice their micro expressions. Do you notice one right now? Yeah, I got you did the mirror others posture? How am I sitting right now? What am I doing? Hold your hands up like this, grab something, mirror it observe the others affect, affect is a sciency term that means emotional state. How's my emotional state right now? I work in man, this is fun. I'm having fun talking to you telling you about empathy. So that's my emotional state. Can you notice that can you match my tone of voice T and P A T H Y Ron T tone of voice match it match your other person's tone of voice that will naturally make you more empathetic to their situation? And then H is hearing and that's a whole person listening and hearing. This is a lot of complex stuff. But oftentimes when we're listening to somebody we're really actually thinking about the next thing we're going to say and not just listening without an agenda. And that's the key to building empathy is to listen without an agenda. And finally, Y is checking your response. So how are the actions and words of other people influencing your response and that's the EMPATHY method before building, cultivating and developing more empathy.
