Beyond Small Talk: The Power of Asking Open-Ended Questions
So, when you talk to somebody, as we all do, we kind of have this default set of questions that we ask each other. How are you doing? How are the holidays? How are they kids and your family? And we have default answers. holidays were great. Families doing good, blah, blah, blah. There is a lot more to life. than just those default answers and questions. This is a suggestion to develop empathy with other people by asking open ended questions. open ended questions are questions that are more about how and what why are tell me about which invite somebody to elaborate and give you a bit more information than our default programmed answers. There's a great book called Ask more by Frank Sesno and It delves into the power and greed, the CNN reporter that wrote a book about asking really good questions. So take a moment to think about your default questions and default answers and break that cycle. Ask some open ended questions. One of my favorites is how might we?
I love that. Take anything that you have, in your mind, rephrase it into how might we. It's life changing.
