Managing Anger: Steps to Process and Overcome Negative Emotions

How do you get unstuck from feeling angry or in a category of emotions inside anger? Well, you eventually want to get to a place where you can cultivate gratitude. That mindset really does help neutralize anger. But to process that, first make a distance between yourself and people, places, or things that are making you angry. Just give yourself that gift of a little bit of space and then work on a few exercises to calm yourself down. Breathing exercises, identification, and mindfulness – I have a video on that. Then focus on thinking if you can forgive the people, places, or things that are causing your sense of anger. Forgiveness, as per my other video, is a gift you give yourself; it's not being weak. Reframe the situation. So, if you're angry about something, really work on thinking through the situation from other perspectives and see if you can come up with maybe the opposite of the situation, just flip it on its head, or maybe you can think of it from the other person's perspective. Then write down what you're grateful for. Over the course of hours, minutes, days, weeks, taking those steps will help you really process the anger that you're feeling in a healthy way.
